Green Pool? Common Causes and When to Call a Professional

Green water almost always comes down to one of a handful of causes. Here's how to tell which one you've got, and when it's time to call in help.

A pool doesn't turn green overnight for no reason — it's almost always one of a short list of causes, and figuring out which one saves a lot of wasted chemicals.

Low or crashed chlorine

This is the most common cause by far. Heavy rain, high bather load, extended sun exposure, or a salt cell that's underperforming can all let chlorine drop low enough for algae to take hold within a day or two, especially in Southwest Florida's heat.

Poor circulation or filtration

Chlorine can be at the right level and algae can still grow in "dead spots" where water isn't circulating well — corners, behind ladders, areas the return jets don't reach. A weak pump or a dirty filter makes this worse across the whole pool, not just the corners.

Metals in the water

A green tint that doesn't respond to shocking the way algae normally would can point to dissolved metals — copper from an aging heat exchanger or well water, for example — staining the water or the pool surface rather than true algae growth. This needs a different treatment approach entirely.

pH and alkalinity way out of range

Chlorine barely works as a sanitizer when pH is too high, which is part of how a pool can have "enough" chlorine on paper and still go green. Getting pH and alkalinity back in range is often step one, before chlorine levels even matter.

When it's a DIY fix vs. when to call someone

Cloudy water with normal test readings often clears up with a filter clean and a day of extra circulation. Full green water, a strong algae smell, or water that stays cloudy after a shock treatment usually means there's an equipment issue underneath it — a pump not running enough hours, a salt cell not producing, or a filter that needs more than a rinse.

We can usually turn it around fast

Weekly service customers rarely see this happen in the first place, since we catch the early signs — low chlorine trend, weak circulation — before they become a full green pool. If yours has already gone green, we service Estero, Verdana Village, The Place at Corkscrew, Bonita Springs, Naples, Fort Myers and Cape Coral and can usually get it back on track quickly.
