Leak Detection: How We Find (and Fix) Hidden Pool Leaks

Losing more than about a quarter-inch of water a day is usually a leak, not evaporation. Here's how we actually track one down before recommending a fix.

A little water loss to evaporation is normal, especially in Southwest Florida's heat and wind. Losing noticeably more than that — and refilling the pool every few days — usually means an actual leak. Here's how we track one down.

Step one: rule out evaporation

The classic bucket test is still a useful first check: mark the water level inside a bucket sitting in the pool and on the pool wall itself, then compare the drop after 24 hours. If the pool's level dropped noticeably more than the bucket's, evaporation isn't the explanation.

Structural leak or equipment leak?

The next question is where. A pool that only loses water while the pump is running often has a pressure-side plumbing leak — something on the return lines. A pool that keeps losing water even with the pump off points more toward the shell, a suction line, or a skimmer or light fitting.

Dye testing

For suspected structural leaks around fittings, lights, or visible cracks, a small amount of dye released near the suspected spot will get pulled into an active leak, showing exactly where water is escaping without any guesswork.

Pressure testing the plumbing

For underground pipe leaks that aren't visible, we pressure-test individual plumbing lines to isolate which line is losing pressure. This narrows a "somewhere under the deck" problem down to one specific line before anything gets dug up.

Common culprits we find

  • A cracked or loose skimmer fitting, often from ground settling
  • A worn light niche gasket
  • A pressure-side plumbing joint that's failed underground
  • A crack at the shell-to-deck joint
