From ignition faults to error codes to a heat pump that just won't warm the water, here are the pool heater issues we see most often — and what usually causes them.

A pool heater that won't fire, won't hold temperature, or throws a code on the display is one of the most common calls we get — and one of the easiest to misdiagnose from the couch. Here's what's usually behind it.

Gas heaters: ignition faults

An ignition fault code usually means the heater is trying to light and failing, which can come from a dirty flame sensor, a weak igniter, low gas pressure, or a blocked vent. It's rarely the whole heater — it's almost always one specific component in the ignition sequence.

Gas heaters: it lights but won't stay on

If the burner fires and then shuts back off within a few seconds, the flame sensor is the first thing we check. A sensor reading that's slightly off tells the control board "no flame detected" even though there is one, and the heater safely shuts itself down.

Low water flow shutting the heater down

Both gas and electric heaters have a flow switch that has to see adequate water movement before they'll run. A dirty filter, a partially closed valve, or a pump that's lost some output can all trip this safety — which means a "heater problem" sometimes traces back to a completely different part of the system.

Heat pumps: running but not warming the water

Heat pumps pull warmth from the surrounding air, so their performance dips on unusually cool nights — which does happen even in Southwest Florida in the winter months. Outside of that, a heat pump that runs constantly without raising the temperature often points to a refrigerant issue or a failing compressor.

Error codes are a starting point, not a diagnosis

Every brand's code just narrows down where to look — it doesn't replace an actual inspection. We diagnose the specific component behind the code (sensor, board, valve, switch) before recommending anything, whether your system runs on gas, electric, or solar.
