A pool pump rarely fails all at once. It usually sends warning signs for weeks before it actually quits — and most of those signs point to a repair, not a full replacement. Here's what we check first when a pump comes in for diagnosis.
1. Grinding, screeching, or rattling
A healthy pump motor runs at a steady hum. Grinding or screeching almost always means the motor bearings are worn, which is a straightforward bearing or motor-end replacement, not a whole new pump. Rattling is more often something loose in the housing, or debris caught in the impeller.
2. Weak water flow or a struggling skimmer
If your return jets have less push than they used to, or your skimmer basket isn't pulling debris the way it should, the pump may not be the problem at all — a clogged filter, a cracked impeller, or an air leak on the suction side can all look like "the pump is dying" when they're actually a smaller, cheaper fix.
3. The breaker keeps tripping
A pump that trips its breaker is usually telling you the motor is drawing too much current, often from a failing capacitor or a motor that's seized up slightly from age or corrosion. Capacitors are a quick, inexpensive swap and a very common reason a pump seems "dead" when it isn't.
4. Leaking from the pump housing or seal
A drip at the seal plate is typically a worn shaft seal — a routine repair. A crack in the housing itself is a bigger call, and depends on where the crack is and how the pump was mounted.
5. It's just old and inefficient
This is really the only case where replacement usually wins outright: single-speed pumps more than 10–12 years old often cost more to run than a variable-speed replacement saves you in a season or two, especially with Florida's pool season running most of the year.
Why this matters
We built our whole equipment repair division around one rule: we repair before we replace. Every pump we're called out for gets diagnosed first — motor, capacitor, seal, impeller, wiring — before anyone talks about a replacement. Homeowners in Estero, Verdana Village, The Place at Corkscrew, Bonita Springs and across Southwest Florida call us specifically because we'll tell you honestly which one it is.
